Public-Private Partnerships: "The Human Side of Technology"

“In the face of the darkest hour of humanity, there is an opportunity for the brightest side of humanity”

Edward G. Happ, Chairman and Director of NetHope explains how technology provides the tools to scale our humanity. Technology is the way to make a huge impact in

the world.

Technology Delivering Hope

Founded in 2001, NetHope brings together humanitarian organizations to collaborate around the use of technology to better respond to people in need.  If we work together, technology can be delivered to the front-line- where it’s needed. When we work together as a group, much more effective partnerships can be facilitated with corporations. This is the NetHope vision.

In the immediate hours following a disaster, having access to a high-speed communications link is the connection to saving lives. Without communications, citizens in need are cut off from the outside world- an outside world who desperately want to help.

Now with access to mobile technology, citizens can directly participate in the supply chain. They can supply the data needed directly at the point of need. With a mobile phone in hand, citizens are now the front-line in disaster and humanitarian relief efforts.

Why TPF is a Catalyst Funder of Open Humanitarian Initiative

NetHope’s vision, mission, and approach matches The Patterson Foundation focus on innovation, flexibility, collaboration, and partnerships. When organizations engage in innovative collaboration, sharing the value of what they learn by working together to achieve a synergy that benefits all involved, New Realities are possible.

Since NetHope personifies The Patterson Foundation approach, they have chosen to become a catalyst funder for NetHope’s Open Humanitarian Initiative, which will improve information sharing and information management among humanitarian organizations, affected communities, and governments in disaster-prone countries.

As the lead communications strategist for The Patterson Foundation, and after meeting the NetHope staff at the May2103 Business4Better Conference, I realize the impact technology and partnerships between public organizations and private businesses can have in shaping a better world. While we hear lots of talk of the “dark side” of technology invading our privacy, it truly has the power to help in the time of greatest need and brighten humanity.
